Hellen, Ares and Adonis¡¦Mobile Ap 3 tracks

(Digital Times) Business strategies for mobile application processors from the System LSI infrastructure design center, Device Solutions Division at Samsung Electronics are three tracks for Exynos Octacore(Adonis), Ares and Hellen in 2013. It's heard said that there would be fierce completion for three products when Samsung will decide which processor is better for the Galaxy Note III.

Known well for Octacore with a built-in Samsung Galaxy S4, the Adonis is manufactured using Samsung`s latest 28-nanometer (nm) HKMG (High-k Metal Gate) process. The Exynos 5 Octa is the world's first mobile application processor to implement the new concept of processing architecture, ARM's big.LITTLE¢â, based on the Cortex-A15¢â CPU to offer high-performance in gaming and the Cortex-A7¢â CPU to provide lower-power feature in doing internet search. Samsung Electronics plans to introduce the advanced `Adonis' based on Exynos 5410 in the second half of the year. It's not sure that they have decided which processor would be adopted for the Samsung's smart phones. The clocks of the Adonis are expected to be more increased than 1.6Ghz.

The other expected product is a new mobile application processor, called as `Ares'. Like the Adonis, the Ares is manufactured using the 28-nm HKMG process and the Cortex-A15¢â CPU to improve the high-performance. It is expected to have quard-core with more than 2Ghz. While the Imagination's PowerVR SGX544MP3' as for the graphic processing unit is housed in the Adonis, there would be a big possibility to adopt ARM's Mali graphic processing unit for the Ares. The product name of the Ares seems to be Exynos 5440, but it has not been finalized yet.

Following above two products, the Hellen would be one of the hottest products in the mobile application processors. The Adonis and the Ares have the ARM's Cortex-A15¢â CPU architecture, but the Hellen is the industry' first mobile application processor with the Cortex-A50¢â CPU. It will also be manufactured using the 20-nm HKMG process node with much more fine technology than the previous products. If the mass-production schedule would be delayed, there is a possibility of using 14-nm FinFET logic process. The Cortex-A50¢â CPU helps move forward to a new level of high performance. If the ARM's first Cortex mobile processor supporting the 64-bits computing environments would be designed with 64 bits, it enables internal RAM capacity to implement more than 4GB and significantly improve the performance. As the issues about the compatibility with S/Ws could be generated, the adjustment between them should be needed.

Samsung will choose its mobile AP for Samsung Galax Note III, the company's most strategic and main smart phone in the second half of the year, among the three mobile application processors: the Adonis, the Ares and the Hellen. Unfortunately, the company has not decided it yet. After reviewing the consumer's feedback on Samsung Galaxy S4, it's expected they will provide their decision depending on their R&D status within Q2.

Samsung Electronics utilizes the story form Greek mythology for the code names of mobile AP products. Today's main model, Exynos, is a word derived from Greek and means a mixed word of `Smart' and `Green'.

Adonis, in Greek mythology, is the god of beauty and desire. And the Ares means the Greek god of war. With the meaning of smart kid, the Hellen provides the high performance and the lowest power advantages as well as being the new progenitor of the mobile age.
